Internal Door Handles: selection guide and various models

Various models and guide to choosing handles

Buying a door represents an important moment. However, it is true that paying attention to accessories is often the secret to really getting the desired frame.

The internal door handle is a fundamental element, both from a functional and aesthetic point of view. They allow you to open or close the frame, of course, but at the same time they reaffirm its style. They almost form an exclamation, a focal point that catches the eye.

For this reason, it is good to know even briefly the various types of handles, shapes and materials used.

The types of handles for internal doors

The first factor to consider is that the handles are usually sold in pairs. The reason is simple, given that they will be fixed on both sides of the door, so as to allow use from both sides.

The handles can be horizontal, vertical or retractable. The latter model is the one found in sliding doors, or in folding doors, and in general in all fixtures with a rototranslating opening mechanism.

Another important classification of handles concerns the structure. In this case, the choices are as follows:

    Handles with rosette: the simplest choice, with a circular or square shape. It is accompanied by an escutcheon which encloses the keyhole;
    Handle with long plate: in this case, the plate (i.e. the structure on which the actual handle rests) develops in length. Option often used in ancient doors;
    Handle integrated in the door: the recessed handle is the one found in sliding or folding doors. They may also be called drag handles, and they come in all sorts of shapes.

The locks and the opening mechanism

The handle also determines the type of door opening. In this case, the primary choice concerns models with or without lock or pawl (essential component of European cylinder locks).

The lock changes structurally according to the type of door. For example:

    In swing doors, as well as in sliding models, the lock is recessed inside the frame;
    In glass doors, the lock must be "attached" to the door, as it cannot be recessed.

The materials

As for the materials, the choice is certainly varied. Different alternatives are available on the market, all with obvious strengths. Here is a quick summary of the most common options:

    Steel: particularly resistant to corrosion;
    Aluminum - economical choice, resistant to corrosion;
    Brass: very resistant to wear and shocks;
    Zamak: superb resistance to wear and shock.

How to correctly match the handle to the door?

Knowing more about the types, materials and functions of doors can help you choose better. To make the most correct decision, however, it is good to also rely on one's aesthetic taste. And common sense.

For example, it doesn't seem like a good idea to go and install a lock with a modern character on a traditional wooden door, perhaps an old one that has been used for many years. In this case, one could opt for more classic models, such as this Brunita Rossella handle.

At the same time, insisting on an excessively sophisticated handle on a contemporary swing door does not appear to be a good course of action. On occasions like these, the best strategy may be to opt for sobriety. Like that of this bronzed aluminum handle.

In particularly complex times like the ones we are living in, where the health aspect is increasingly important, it is good to also take hygiene into account. A target that can be easily achieved with SecuSan antivirus handles.
