Surface-Mounted Sliding Doors
Surface-mounted sliding doors are a modern, elegant solution for dividing interior spaces. With a wall-mounted track, these doors offer a clean, discreet profile that helps make the most of the available space.
Available in a variety of materials and finishes, from natural wood to lacquered and clear glass options, surface-mounted sliding doors adapt easily to different interior styles.
Advanced technology ensures smooth, silent movement, while easy installation on walls that are already square makes fitting them simple, even as a DIY job.
Ideal for anyone looking for contemporary, functional design, these doors are perfect for enhancing the look of interiors, allowing greater flexibility in the layout of living spaces.
How a surface-mounted sliding door works
In a surface-mounted sliding door, the leaf hangs from a track fixed above the opening and slides parallel to the wall, kept steady by a floor guide. Nothing goes into the wall, unlike a pocket door: a surface-mounted sliding door is installed quickly in an opening that is already finished, with no counterframe and no building work, so no demolition and no walls to repaint. And the swing space of a hinged door in front of the opening disappears.
Exposed track or invisible track
The external track defines the character of the door even before the finish does.
Exposed track
For those who want the mechanism to become a design feature: an anodised aluminium beam or, in rustic and industrial interiors, a metal track paired with solid wood. It is fixed to the wall above the opening, and the beam can be adjusted in height during installation. If you prefer a neater line, you can choose the models with a pelmet, which conceals the track in a single profile.
Invisible track
The leaf appears to float, with no visible supports: this is the choice for minimalist interiors, where every technical element has to disappear. Magical is an invisible aluminium track that arrives already cut to size, can be fitted even with the skirting board in place and guides the leaf gently to the end of its travel without slamming; a concealed bottom guide and an anti-derailment block keep it stable. MagiFlow adds magnetic levitation: no friction between the parts, and adjustments that compensate for walls that are not level. Both are also available separately among our aluminium tracks.
Standard sizes and made-to-measure sliding doors
Standard sizes range from 70 to 110 cm in width and from 210 to 240 cm in height depending on the model, up to 200 cm with the double-leaf version. Made-to-measure sliding doors are needed when the opening falls outside these values, such as a wide passage or a high ceiling. Before ordering, check three parameters.
| Parameter | What to check |
|---|---|
| Width of the opening | The leaf must cover it completely: measure the finished opening. |
| Free space beside the opening | At least equal to the width of the leaf, clear of switches, sockets and radiators; with two leaves, on both sides. |
| Weight of the leaf | Within the load capacity of the track: 80 kg for most systems, up to 120 kg with MagiFlow. |
Materials and finishes
From white or custom-colour laminate to RAL lacquer, through to panelled, pantographed, custom-printed or framed-mirror designs. To bring in light there is the model with a glass panel, or the whole range of glass sliding doors. All made in Italy, as we have done since 1969. The finishing touch is the handle: choose from our door handles.
Where to install it: bedrooms, bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes
In the bedroom it divides the space without taking up room around the bed. A surface-mounted sliding door for the bathroom is the answer for an en-suite carved out of the bedroom, where a hinged door would get in the way; with a mirror, it adds a full-length reflective surface. For a walk-in wardrobe, a surface-mounted sliding door without an exposed track works well: when closed, it reads as a continuous surface. And if the recess has its own unusual dimensions, we make a non-standard surface-mounted sliding door: after you order, we contact you to define the measurements.
Frequently asked questions
-
Do surface-mounted sliding doors need a counterframe?
No. The track is fixed directly to the wall above the opening, which stays intact: a counterframe is only needed for doors that slide inside the wall.
-
Can they be installed without building work?
Yes, if the opening is well finished and the wall is square. Magical kits include the mechanism, accessories and guide. -
How much space is needed beside the opening?
At least the width of the leaf. If in doubt, message us on WhatsApp at 0941901172 or email info@fipporte.com before ordering: we will check the configuration together with you, free of charge. -
What is the difference from a pocket sliding door?
A pocket door slides into the wall and also frees up the side wall, but it requires a counterframe and masonry work; a surface-mounted door stays visible and becomes part of the décor. If you prefer the former, discover our pocket sliding doors.
