REI Fire Doors
A fire door – also known as a REI door (in English, fire door) – is a component of passive fire protection designed to isolate flames and toxic fumes within a compartment, reducing the spread of fire and ensuring a safe exit from the building.
Unlike an ordinary door, FIP Porte's metal REI doors are capable of actively combating flames and harmful fumes, all without compromising aesthetic appeal. These fixtures are used where it is necessary to rely on environments capable of handling all possible emergencies: hotels, offices, accommodation facilities, as well as two-story or multi-story buildings and rooms leading to garages.
The most common installation contexts include schools, hospitals, commercial premises, and offices, where regulations mandate certified solutions.
REI Classes: Differences between REI 45, REI 60, and REI 120
The acronym REI identifies three properties that the fire door must simultaneously guarantee in case of fire: mechanical Resistance, Hermeticity to smoke and flames, and thermal Insulation. The number that follows – 45, 60, or 120 – indicates the minutes of exposure to flames that the door can withstand before sustaining structural damage. In the European context, the same performance is certified with the acronym EI and CE marking (mandatory since 2019).
|
Classification |
Certified resistance |
Typical regulatory contexts |
|
REI 45 |
45 minutes |
Staircases in low-rise buildings, low-risk compartmentalization |
|
REI 60 |
60 minutes |
Staircases in medium-rise buildings, boiler rooms, offices, hotels |
|
REI 120 |
120 minutes |
Garages, technical rooms, connected garages, buildings over 8 floors |
The class to be installed is not a discretionary choice: it is determined by the applicable regulations for the specific context. REI 120 doors, for example, are mandatory for garages, high-risk technical rooms, and condominiums over 8 floors – contexts where two hours of certified resistance can make the difference between a manageable intervention and a disaster. If you are unsure which class you need, in our guide on the price, quality, and aesthetics of REI doors, you will find a detailed analysis of the variables to consider. Metal Fire Doors: The FIP Porte Catalog
In the catalog, you will find a wide selection of steel REI doors in various versions and sizes: both single-leaf and double-leaf to cover larger openings. It is possible to add a panic bar to meet the requirements of fire safety regulations in public places and hotels.
All doors are made of galvanized steel sheet, painted with thermosetting epoxy-polyester powder coating at 180 °C, available in all RAL colors and customizable in terms of fixing (anchors, plugs, or false frame).
Those looking for an economical fire door will find a concrete answer in our ready-to-deliver REI doors: reduced delivery times and no additional costs related to custom production. Certifications and current regulations for REI doors
Every fire door must be certified before installation. The relevant Italian regulatory framework is DM 16 February 2007, which incorporates European standards EN 13501-2 and EN 1634-1. The essential points:
• Mandatory approval for all public, accommodation, and production buildings.
• Classification plate affixed to each specimen after passing fire tests in an accredited laboratory.
• Installation by a qualified installer, with the issuance of a Declaration of correct installation – a fundamental document for fire testing (UNI 11473-1).
• Certified hardware: hinges, door closers, panic bars, and locks are an integral part of the approval. Replacing them with unapproved parts may invalidate the REI class.
• Mandatory periodic maintenance: at least twice a year, with registration in a fire safety logbook (DM 10 March 1998, DPR 37/98). From September 2024, maintenance requires technicians with specific qualifications – read all the obligations stipulated by UNI 11473-1 to know what to check and how often.
FIP Porte metal doors are certified EI2 60 and REI 120 compliant with UNI 9723, with CE marking and a Declaration of Performance (DoP).
Choose the right REI door for your needs
Installing the correct fire door depends on several key factors, including the regulatory context, the building's intended use, and the required resistance class. The FIP Porte technical team is available to guide you through the entire process, from selection to delivery, with ready-to-deliver solutions available throughout Italy.
