REI Fire Doors

A fire door – also known as a REI door – is a component of passive fire protection designed to contain flames and heat within a compartment, slowing the spread of fire and ensuring a safe way out of the building.

Unlike an ordinary door, the metal REI doors in this collection are designed to contain flames and smoke, without compromising on appearance. They are used wherever rooms must be able to cope with any emergency: hotels, offices, accommodation facilities, as well as buildings with two or more storeys and rooms leading to garages.
The most common installation contexts include schools, hospitals, commercial premises and offices, where regulations require certified solutions.

REI Classes: Differences between REI 30, REI 60 and REI 120

The acronym REI stands for load-bearing capacity (R), integrity against flames and hot gases (E) and thermal insulation (I); for doors, E and I are what count. The number that follows – 30, 60 or 120 – indicates for how many minutes, in the laboratory fire test, the door maintains these properties. In the European classification (EN 13501-2), doors use the acronym EI.

The class to install is not a matter of choice: it is set by the building's fire safety design, according to the regulations that apply to the specific context. REI 120 doors are used where the longest protection time is needed, as in many garages and in higher-risk technical rooms: situations where two hours of certified resistance can make the difference between a manageable intervention and a disaster. Metal Fire Doors: The FIP Porte Catalogue

The catalogue offers a wide selection of steel REI doors in several versions and sizes, both single-leaf and double-leaf for wider openings. A panic bar can be added to meet fire safety requirements in public buildings and hotels.

All doors are made of galvanised steel sheet, powder-coated with epoxy-polyester cured at 180 °C, white RAL 9010 as standard (RAL 7035, 1013, 5010 and 7016 on request), fixed with anchors or wall plugs in masonry and with a wrap-around frame in plasterboard.

Certifications and current regulations for REI doors

In Italy, internal pedestrian fire doors are covered by type approval (Italian Ministry of the Interior) under D.M. 21 June 2004. CE marking of the complete door (EN 16034 together with EN 14351-1, with the Declaration of Performance) has been mandatory since 2019 for pedestrian doors for external use, i.e. those separating spaces with different climatic conditions. The fire resistance class is determined by the EN 1634-1 test and expressed according to EN 13501-2; for type-approved doors, the REI class corresponds to the European EI2 class. The essential points:

• Type approval or CE marking: ministerial type approval for internal doors, CE marking with DoP for doors for external use.

• A label on every door, showing the class, the type approval code and the serial number.

• Installation to be entrusted to a qualified installer (UNI 11473-1): in activities subject to inspection by the Italian Fire Brigade (Vigili del Fuoco), the installer's declaration of correct installation is required.

• Certified hardware: hinges, door closer, panic bar and lock are part of the certified configuration. Replacing them with parts not provided for can invalidate the REI class.

• Mandatory periodic maintenance: at least every six months (UNI 11473-1 and the manufacturer's manual), with the checks recorded in the fire safety log required by the Ministerial Decree of 1 September 2021. In workplaces, from 25 September 2026 the checks must be carried out by a qualified maintenance technician (those who applied for the qualification by that date may work until the outcome of the assessment, and no later than 31 March 2027) – read all the obligations under UNI 11473-1 to know what to check and how often.

The hinged doors in this collection are type-approved Proget doors (Italian Ministry of the Interior), in class REI 60 and REI 120: every door carries the type approval label.
