Guide · Fixing the track to the wall

How to fix the track to the wall

The track is screwed to the wall or lintel through its upper flange, with evenly spaced holes. These are the 6 steps of the FIP fitting sheet, with the right wall plug for each type of wall.

  • 6 steps
  • 30–40 cm between one hole and the next
  • 5–10 cm first and last hole from the ends

Before you start

Check the wall

The fixing depends on the type of wall: before drilling, check in the table below which wall plug and which bit you need.

Caution. Before drilling, make sure there are no electrical or plumbing lines in the wall. Never drill the running channel of the track and do not tighten the screws so much that the profile deforms: if the flange bends, the carriages will not run smoothly.

You'll need

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Spirit level
  • Drill
  • Bit to suit the wall plug
  • Screwdriver drill
  • Wall plugs and screws for your wall
Steps 1–6

The fixing

Draw the line, mark and drill the holes, then screw the track on starting from the centre.

  1. 1

    Draw the fixing line

Transfer the height of the track onto the wall, or the lintel, and draw a reference line. Check it with the spirit level.

  2. 2

    Mark the holes 5–10 · 30–40 cm

Hold the track on the line and mark the holes through the upper flange of the profile: the first and last 5–10 cm from the ends, the others every 30–40 cm, at constant spacing.

  3. 3

    Drill the wall

Drill at the marks with the bit that suits your wall plug, as in the table below, keeping the hole perpendicular to the wall.

  4. 4

    Insert the wall plugs

Blow the dust out of the holes and insert the wall plugs flush with the wall.

  5. 5

    Fix the track Caution

Screw in starting from the centre hole and work towards the ends, checking the level again. Tighten fully, but without deforming the flange of the profile.

  6. 6

    Check before hanging the door

Before hanging the door, check that the track is level and that the running channel, where the carriages run, is free of offcuts and dust.

Recommended fixing

Which wall plug to use, wall by wall

Wall

Solid masonry, concrete

Ø 8 nylon wall plug with TPS 6 × 60 screw.

Drilling: Ø 8 bit, 60 mm deep.

Wall

Hollow brick, hollow blocks

Wall plug for hollow materials, or chemical anchor with M8 threaded rod.

Drilling: Ø 10–12 bit, using the mesh sleeve.

Wall

Plasterboard

Not suitable without reinforcement: the track must be fixed to a timber batten or a metal profile built into the wall.

Before fitting: check the wall's stud framework.

If your wall is not one of these, or you don't know what it is made of, send us a photo before drilling.
